Jill Scott is the only child from her mom Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. The family was also dominated by her grandmother and grew up as an only child. Scott was a student at her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls and after she graduated she enrolled in Temple University. While working two part-time jobs, Scott also studied secondary teaching at Temple University. She was hoping to be a English teacher at the high school level. She had a dream of becoming a high-school English teacher, was shattered when she quit school. Her career began by performing live poems and the work of her own. Then she joined forces along with Amir Quest Thompson, a part of The Roots. They were able to collaborate in writing You Got Me. She came out during a Roots concert. Then she secured collaborations which included Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She gained performance experience during the Canada Tour of Broadway's musical Rent. Also, she was the first signing agent for Hidden Beach Recordings.
